  • Chemical Resistance: PP is resistant to many chemical solvents, bases, and acids. This property makes it ideal for manufacturing containers and equipment that handle various chemicals.
  • Ability to Float in Water: Polypropylene has a lower density than water, which allows it to float.
  • Resistance to High Temperatures: Polypropylene can withstand temperatures up to around 120 degrees Celsius. Polypropylene products also withstand steam sterilisation, an essential feature for medical devices and food packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Is polypropylene autoclavable?

Yes. Polypropylene withstands steam-sterilisation temperatures, which is one reason it is so widely used in medical components. Radiation is the caveat: standard grades embrittle at a typical 25 kGy gamma dose, while radiation-stabilised grades run to around 50 kGy. EtO is generally suitable. The sterilisation process and its validation sit with you as the device manufacturer; Carmo proposes candidate grades from production experience.
